Music

Music is a unique art form that allows students to express themselves in a way that they cannot in any other subject.

Music at MRC focuses on the development of performance skills and an understanding of the elements of music through their use in performance and composition.

In year 7 students learn to play drums, read rhythms, write music, compose electronic music, investigate instruments and sound and performs songs in large and small groups.

Year 8 music introduces some beginning chord theory and structural analysis through listening, performance and songwriting.

Year 9 Music focuses on using technology to create and manipulate music and on further developing performance skills in solo and group contexts.

Year 10 Music prepares students for VCE Music Performance with an emphasis on developing performance skills as well as theory and aural skills.

MRC offers VCE Music Performance for year 11 and 12, with students able to complete the solo or group performance stream.

The classroom music program is strongly supported by the Instrumental Music Program where students can learn an instrument with a specialist instrumental teacher on a withdrawal basis once a week.

Music students perform regularly in class, at assemblies, school functions, community events and concerts.

Drama

Drama is the expression and exploration of personal, cultural and social worlds through role and situation that engages, entertains and challenges. Students create meaning as drama makers, performers and audiences as they enjoy and analyse their own and others’ stories and points of view. Like all art forms, drama has the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students, excite the imagination and encourage students to reach their creative and expressive potential.

At MRC students study Drama in years 7 and 8 through the Performing Arts program, along with Music. Students engage in activities that help them create meaning, stories and characters and they develop performances of short plays that are presented to an audience.

Students are able to extend their Drama skills through the elective program at years 9 and 10 and to study VCE Drama at years 11 and 12.

Students are also able to be a part of a school musical each year. Recent years have seen performances of ‘The Truth About Cinderella’, ‘Goldilocks’ and ‘Hero’ to hundreds of primary school children and to the broader school community.
